President Obama seeks a new era of energy exploration

April 23rd, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Politics

This Wendesday was called “Earth Day”, and US President Barack Obama used the opportunity to pitch his energy plan, which calls for a “new era of energy exploration in America”. He argued that his plan would help the economy and the environment at once by leasing federal waters for the purpose of generating electricity from wind and ocean currents. “Wind power can generate 20 percent of the countrys electricity by 2030 and 250000 jobs”, Obama said during a visit to a wind turbine tower manufacturing plant.

According to the President, a variety of energy sources will be required to reduce the US dependence on fossil fuels. A boost in domestic production of oil and natural gas in the short term would be needed before fully transitioning to alternative sources, Obama said. Over the long term, new energy sources would be required both to address the issue of climate change and strengthen the economy.
